Prediction of Scaling and Corrosion in Cooling Towers with OLI Platform V10

The basis of a cooling tower operation is to evaporate a portion of the process water and use the heat duty change (this is an endothermic reaction) to cool the remaining water. Evaporation, however, increases the dissolved solid concentration (calcium, magnesium, chloride, silica, etc.) in the remaining water. As this process water gets reused and recycled, the concentrations increase further, and eventually, salts begin to precipitate or metal surfaces start to corrode. The only mitigation options are to use chemical inhibitors or to replace a portion of the recirculation water with low salinity makeup water. Thus, operating a cooling tower plant that simultaneously minimizes water use, scaling/corrosion problems, and chemical requirements is an important process target. Diana will show how to set up a cooling tower simulation using OLI Flowsheet: ESP. She will explore different factors that can have an impact on the efficiency of the cooling process: (1) Quality of the feed water, (2) Quality of the make-up water, and (3) amount of blowdown. She will also show the effect of acid treatment adding HCl to the recirculating water to reduce scaling buildup. Corrosion rate calculations on different construction materials using the recirculating water chemistry will be also shown.
